Scanning the Reel

We attempted to scan this part with multiple methods but we found the best results using this Lego head. Its repeating and destined geometry allowed the scanner to always keep track of those features while also capturing the intended geometry.

We found that multiple passes from different angles gave the final scan the best results.

We used a Einstar from Shining 3D and their software EXStar

Editing the Mesh

  • Holes were filled

  • Optimized and simplified mesh allowing for easy manipulation in Fusion360

Cutting and Alignment

  • Cutting the Scan in half for mirroring in Fusion360

  • This also aligns the cut plan with the global coordinate system

Adding features

  • Converting .stl into body

  • Orreinting in Fusion360

  • Mirroring surfaces and adding accurate interfacing features
